MITCHEL MONTAGNA
All Dimmed Memories
The pieces are gone
Time flicks them away
The first time we met
was a sparkling day

Skies bright as a jewel
High fields blazing light
Yet still her eyes burned
with smoke from the night

We hitched into town
Dug deep into dawn
She laughed without fear
like her future was gone.
---
Young kids board a bus
She slid up the aisle
The boy turned to see
bright bolts of a smile

She wore buckled shoes
Her curls fell in place
A fold of her skirt
drew blood to his face

Their bus took the road
Light breeze tasted sweet
He stole dizzy looks
at the girl in her seat.
---
I arrived very late
I hung with a crew
Their cigarettes burned
like dialogues do

They spoke out with passion
They told quirky jokes
I drank Sombreros
and lifted their smokes

I snaked to the john
My ego broke free
My face in the mirror
blinked with a strange glee

Come winter I’m empty
They rushed by like a flood
All dimmed memories
as potent as blood.
