Carnival

The Ferris wheel was stalling
The moon rose on a hill
The passengers were calling
The sky began to fill

Across town, bets were waging
Fast trotters bathed in light
The river’s flow was raging:
white water churning bright

Boys were ramming mini-cars
They scuffled on the piers
Dreamers watched the pale stars
burn through a billion years

One swore he saw the devil
then fled as if possessed
Some thought him on the level
Some knew he spoke in jest

A coaster reached the summit
then plunged across the night
Kids got pale-cheeked from it,
their smirks pulled taut with fright

The working folk were sleeping
The streets had bars to tend
An illness left them weeping
They toasted their old friend

Dawn broke blushed and blazing
Men stowed away the fair
White-tails started grazing
The turf was turning bare

The people took to sighing
Their lights and dreams had swirled
Their hearts were thrilled by flying
above a brand-new world
